Good morning {{first_name}},

I was thinking about something over breakfast today and I realised I’ve never really explained it properly.

So I wanted to make it clear why I choose to work for myself instead of having a manager.

Growing up, I noticed my family all work on their own terms.

My dad runs his business, my uncle works from anywhere, and my grandad on my mum’s side owns property but still drives a taxi because he enjoys it.

No clocking in, no asking permission, no fixed schedules.

Simple analogy: Working for yourself is like having an unlocked front door. You can walk in and out freely, instead of waiting for someone to open it for you.

My short experience working for someone else

Back in Year 10, I did work experience at a charity shop.

Five days. Set hours. Had to ask for breaks.

It was fine for the week, but I realised I could not do this long-term.

Also, I noticed that working for someone else is basically filling their pockets with cash, not mine. All that effort and time is not building my own future. I want it to.

Why self-employment makes sense for me

  1. Freedom - Work from anywhere, come home whenever, take breaks on my terms.

  2. Comfort and control My environment, my schedule, my projects. I get to build the life I want.

  3. Experience early - A big bonus for me is that I’m only 16. Starting now means I am learning and growing while most people are still figuring out what they want. By the time I’m 20 or 21, I’ll have years of real experience that others haven’t even touched yet. That is a huge advantage.

  4. Choice over work - My grandad drives a taxi even though he could retire. Self-employment is not about getting rich. It is about being able to choose what you do and how you spend your time.

Family pattern

  • Late grandad (dad’s side) ran his own shop

  • Dad started his business at 29 with zero experience and now works from anywhere

  • Grandad (mum’s side) owns property and drives a taxi by choice

  • Uncle runs an architectural design studio

Short stat: 1 in 7 workers in the UK are self-employed. In my family, it is basically the norm.

Why I’m doing it now

The earlier I start, the stronger I get. Every client, every project, every mistake builds me up.

I am planting my own seeds instead of watering someone else’s garden. When I look back in a few years, I will be glad I started at 16.
